Estimate$500 – $700
Established in 1893, Mikimoto was founded by Kokichi Mikimoto, known by many as the ‘Pearl King.’ Mikimoto earned acclaim after creating the first semi-spherical cultured pearl and later developing the techniques to create fully spherical cultured pearls, revolutionizing the pearl industry. He opened his first boutique in Japan in 1899, and, in 1927, following a New York Times article detailing his visit with Thomas Edison, Mikimoto became a household name. The firm is renowned for its exquisite designs and superb pearls, only designing with pearls that pass its rigorous standard. Mikimoto pieces often feature Akoya, South Sea, and Tahitian pearls. Today, you can visit the Mikimoto Museum on Pearl Island to see the original cultured pearl necklace, which serves as the template for all traditional Mikimoto pearl strands.
