French-Vietnamese jewelry designer Jean Dinh Van (b. 1927), known for his sculptural yet minimalist designs, first developed his skills while studying at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris. In 1950, he joined Cartier in Paris like his father before him, perfecting his skills as an apprentice and jeweler. After eight years at Cartier Paris, Dinh Van set out on his own, initially working on a collaboration with Jean Schlumberger. In 1965, he founded his own brand and in 1967 he was recognized at the World Fair in Montreal for his unique designs, selected as one the four best French jewelers to exhibit. This restarted his partnership with Cartier, this time with the New York branch. Dinh Van became the first ever designer whom Cartier permitted to co-sign their designs, a collaboration which lasted for a decade. His designs were revolutionary, inspired by young culture and architectural minimalism. He united luxury and affordability in his work, opting for materials such as steel and hardstone instead of precious metals and large gemstones. In 1977, Dinh Van founded his own eponymous brand, with boutiques in Geneva, Paris, and New York.
